In the past on other sites we've had live chats and we determined that it was better to get sustained message board activity first then have a live chat.
There is an IM system that you can send messages back and forth in the meantime.
Another reason the message board is better is people will find the site because of what's being discussed. A live chat doesn't get indexed by any search engines like a message board does.
